What is a sleep study?

A sleep study is a test used to evaluate your breathing pattern, heart rate, oxygen level and brain wave activity.

How is this done?

Information is gathered during the test by:

Pulmonary function tests are a painless way to measure how well your lungs are working. A complete series has 3 tests. You may be given the entire series or only certain parts. The results may explain; Shortness of Breath, The type of lung problem, How smoking may have affected the lungs, and Whether breathing problems are a risk during general anesthesia.

During the test the tech will coach you through out the process. You will be sitting in a clear plastic box that looks like a phone booth. You will wear a nose clip so you breathe only through your mouth. If you happen to get tired, you can take a break between tests. Testing runs about 30 minutes. Depending on your ability to perform the test.

After testing, you can return to your normal diet and activity. If you were told to skip medications before testing, ask if you should take them when testing is completed. Your Doctor will go over the test results at your next office visit.

A bronchoscopy is an exam of the lungs, used to help diagnose any lung complications. This exam provides a direct view of you breathing passages. A thin flexible tube called a bronchoscope is used. A special light and tiny camera are attatched to the tube. Depending on the results of the bronchoscopy, you may need other tests to confirm your problem.

Bronchoscopys are usually done in a hospital setting. You will be given medications to help you relax and to prevent gagging. The medications may be given IV (intravenous) line. Your nose and throat may be numbed with a special spray prior to the procedure.

A Bronchoscopy takes anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes. While lying on a table with your head raised; Or you may sit in a special chair. Oxygen may be supplied through a nasal soft clip.

After the exam you will be given instructions to follow. To avoid choking, spit out any saliva in your mouth. Avoid eating or drinking anything until the medications have completely worn off. Also try not to cough and clear your throat. If you have a sore throat or hoarseness, gargling may help. The doctor will discuss your test results at your next office visit.
